Obeyd of Z膩k膩n was a satirical poet at the Muzaffarid dynasty of Shiraz in the interregnum between the last Ilkh膩nid (Mongol) emperor and the invasion of Tamerlane. “The Fable of Mice and the Cat” is a mock epic rich with symbolic references to political conduct. It is Machiavelli’s Prince if it was written for and in the parlance of the masses. I translated the poem in the summer of 2014 and turned it into the central piece of a book on the subject, due to be published after the second edition of Shahnameh that is due to appear in April 2025.
