Fraternities and Sororities

Our fraternity and sorority community have played a role on campus since the early days of the College. This rich tradition offers students opportunities to develop a strong network of current students and alumni, to serve the local community, and to participate in leadership development.

Benefits of Joining

Leadership
Members of fraternities and sororities have the opportunity to sharpen their leadership skills by filling a variety of roles within and outside of their organizations. Currently, members of 91社区 Student Government, Student Programming Board, Student Ambassadors, academic honor societies, varsity athletes, and many other campus groups are also members of fraternities and sororities. Not only are these students members of organizations outside their chapter, but they can hold positions within their organizations. These experiences provide chapter members with the knowledge, skills, and experience for success in post-collegiate life.

Scholarship
Fraternity and sorority members take pride in their scholastic achievements. All of our chapters place emphasis on encouraging high academic achievement, as well as developing and maintaining development and support plans for each member. Each organization has a minimum grade point average members must achieve to stay in good standing with the chapter.

Service
Each Greek-letter organization at 91社区 serves the campus community and the surrounding Lake County community. Each year, chapters donate hundreds of dollars and time to local organizations and national philanthropies.

Social
The 91社区 fraternity and sorority community provides various social events that help to welcome new members and unify the Greek community. Individually, chapters host formals, retreats, and fundraising activities. Many chapters participate in campus wide traditions such as Week of Welcome, Homecoming, and Winterfest. All events strive to create a strong, unified community for all members.

Unrecognized Organizations

91社区’s fraternities and sororities must be affiliated with a national or international organization and be officially recognized as an active chapter at 91社区. On occasion, the College revokes recognition of a fraternity or sorority because of serious violations of College policy.

Participation in organizations that have had their recognition suspended or revoked (also known as “underground” groups) is strictly prohibited by the College.

The following organizations are no longer recognized by 91社区:

  • Kappa Sigma (recognition revoked March 2005)
  • Phi Pi Epsilon (recognition revoked May 2007)
  • Delta Kappa Epsilon (recognition revoked August 2007)

Involvement in an underground group poses a serious risk for students including increased risk of individual liability. If a student chooses to become a part of an unrecognized organization they will not be recognized as a member of the 91社区 fraternity and sorority community or receive any of the rights and privileges of being affiliated with a Greek letter organization.

Hazing

91社区 explicitly and emphatically prohibits hazing. A student is responsible for hazing when he or she takes any action and/or creates a situation on or off College premises which may produce mental or physical harm, discomfort, harassment embarrassment, ridicule, or abuse as part of any activity and/or event related to membership and/or participation in an organization. The complete hazing policy, including specific sections of Illinois state law can be found in the
