Notes from Abroad: Emilija in Italy
Emilija Matic '25, a Business major with a concentration in accounting, studied abroad at Florence University of the Arts
Studying abroad in Florence has been an incredible journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and academic growth. One of my favorite aspects of the program was the opportunity to study in Rome for a week. I was immersed in a new city with new Italian art and architecture. On this journey, I got to visit the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, Cinque Terri, different villas, marble workshops, and Viareggio. This was truly an unforgettable experience as I got to see different landmarks, meet new long-lasting friendships, and learn about the history of Italy.
One of the highlights of Florence has been the excursions I have been able to take throughout Italy. The trains are very easy to get around unless you get stuck during a train strike which delays all trains for hours and sometimes even cancels your trip. This happened to us when we were going to Siena and had to wait five hours for the trains to finally start moving. I have been able to visit major cities in Italy where I have been able to see the different cultures, monuments, and foods that each city is known for. Milan was one of my favorite cities, the Milan Duomo was unbelievable and incredibly beautiful. It was my first time trying Italian risotto and chicken cutlets which is what Milan is known for. The food was incredible and felt very homey and authentic to the Italian culture.
Studying in Florence has truly deepened my appreciation for the arts, culture, and simple beauty of sitting at a cafe while enjoying a cup of cappuccino in the morning. The lessons I am learning and the independence of being away from home in a foreign country with a language barrier have allowed me to appreciate and fully take in every moment I spend in Florence. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to experience life in such a remarkable city. I extend my deepest gratitude to Ingrid H. and George L. Speros for their generous scholarship, allowing me to pursue my studies abroad in Florence, Italy.
